What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy involves the treatment of weakness, pain, dysfunction, and conditions affecting the pelvic floor muscles. The type of treatment will depend upon the symptoms you’re experiencing. For example, some symptoms will require relaxing and lengthening of the muscles, while others may require strengthening the muscles.

What should I expect on my first visit?

During your first visit, we will start by asking questions that will give us the history of your symptoms, body, and condition.  We will then do a physical exam which may include an internal exam of the pelvic floor muscles if your condition is related to any type of pelvic floor dysfunction.  We may also examine your external muscles.  This is hands-on examination will be based on your symptoms.   A thorough evaluation allows us to get a complete picture of your condition so that we can provide you with real relief.

After your evaluation is complete, you can expect to get some hands-on treatment from your PT, exercises to start at home between appointments, a detailed treatment plan, and a lot of education before you leave your first visit.

All evaluations and treatment sessions are 1-on-1 with an expert physical therapist in a private treatment room.

What should I wear to my sessions?

Feel free to wear whatever is most comfortable for you.

Do I need a referral for physical therapy?

In the state of Texas, you are allowed to see a physical therapist without a referral for an initial evaluation and initial treatment.  Treatment is allowed for 10 business days without a referral.  If your treatment needs to go beyond those 10 days, a referral will be required.  We can provide you with a referral to give to your healthcare provider or we can assist you with obtaining a referral if we determine that you will need one after your initial evaluation.

How long will I have to come to physical therapy?

The number of treatment sessions and treatment frequency will vary per patient based on your condition, schedule, and budget.  Every plan of care will be individualized and tailored to your needs.  Please call 281-394-4704 or schedule online for a consultation and we can give you a sample treatment plan with detailed frequency and session information based on your specific situation.

Can I bring someone or my child to my appointment?

Yes, you may.  We love children.  Please don’t let babysitting issues cause you to miss your appointments.  If you are comfortable with having your baby or child at your appointments, we will make sure that we are able to get through your treatment session and allow you the ability to meet the needs of your child at the same time.

Can I come to my appointment if I am on my period?

Treatment while on your period is a decision that we leave up to you.  We can complete our treatment sessions with patients during menstruation or we can hold any internal pelvic floor work and focus only on external techniques and exercises during that session.   We are comfortable if you are comfortable.   If you are not comfortable with coming in while on your period, we can reschedule your appointment to a later time.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

If you need to cancel, please let us know at least 24 business hours ahead of time. If you cancel with less than 24 business hours’ notice, we charge $50 late cancellation fee, which your insurance will not reimburse.  If you arrive late or don’t show, we charge the full fee for the session.
